This morning my broody hen had a dead chick in with her not sure what happened but there did seem to be quite a bit of yolk and one of the other eggs had some of that on it. A second egg has pipped and not hatched. I went out to peek at it and the hen was eating this egg! I watched her peck at it and even pull what looked to be black feathers out of it. This was the egg that looked like it had yolk on it from the one this morning. The egg that she ate is only about 18-19 days I took the egg from her there is still movement in the egg. Is it a gonner or can I do something. Also are the other eggs safe or will she kill them? Is it possible that she ate the egg of the dead chick this morning?

If you have an incubator I would take the eggs away from her. I dont have any experiance with this happening, so I dont know what would cause it. But I wouldnt trust her at all

I dont have an incubator. She hatched one chick that is doing great. The egg with a hole I stuck back with her after dark. It was still moving but I doubt it will make it. Maybe a case of her not knowing what is going on. She is doing great with the chick that made it so far.
