Need feedback on letting my chickens out of their run to roam...

I almost never have the slightest bit of trouble getting mine back in. They go out for two or three hours, and by that time they're sick of roaming around and have all settled down under some bushes about thirty feet from their coop. They don't go much farther than that, maybe upt to a hundred feet.

I just hit their treat plate and call to them, and they come running! I only have trouble if I try to get them before they're ready, and they've just found some great stuff in the compost heap or something.

I also have 10 acres and at first I worried about my chickens roaming too far when it was getting dark. You could try putting a (cheap) chicken run around the coop and only let them go in the run for a week or so. I used chicken wire and and 1" wood trim that I bought at Home Depot. I used a staple gun to attach the wire to the stakes. For a "gate" to the enclosure I ended with a stake, just attached to the wire top and bottom and kinda roll it open and closed. You can close the gate where it attaches to your coop with snap clips and and those screw in type metal eyes attached to the coop.

I have trained my chickens to come when I call them by always giving them a treat when they come. Have you tried pieces of bread? My chickens LOVE it! Good luck and don't worry too much - chickens always want to roost at night because their eyesight isn't good when it gets dark. They will get the idea in no time with a little persistence!
