Our new silkie chick wasn’t walking well and on inspection her cord or something from her vent area was wrapped tightly around her leg and when she tried to straighten her leg it was pulling. I made the decision to clip the part on the front of her leg as it looked completely dried out anyway so I figured she wouldn’t be eating/drinking/pooping if it was internal organs. I clipped the fuzz away and freed her leg, being careful to leave the rest of the dried spot to fall off on its own. Fast forward a few days and I noticed she has barely grown at all in the week we’ve had her. She is much smaller than her sister. She’s 8 days old today. I added some hydrohen & sugar to her water and that did seem to perk her up. I sat with her a few times today, making sure she drank and she was definitely getting around better & being more steady when eating. She’s definitely pooping.
She is for sure the runt & The dried area hasn’t fallen off yet. I am using a salve around it but there hasn’t been any oozing or anything like that. She does seem to make more loud chirping than her sister and I haven’t heard her trilling like her sister.
EVERYTHING I read that sounds similar ends with a chick that doesn’t make it. Someone please tell me there is SOME hope! I’m pretty attached to them both and want to do everything I can. I had them on medicated starter but that seemed tougher on their digestion so I switched back to non-medicated.
They do also get a little ACV w/ mother in their water. They are warm but with a cooler area if they need it. They do both settle and sleep, it’s not constant chirping. I just don’t know what to think.

Not much at all! She’s skin and fluff, her sister has weight to her and can easily here are 2 more pictures. Of course, I attributed some of their size difference to her attachment for the first 5-6 days of her life.
She is definitely active but less active and less ‘content’ than her sister. Maybe I just need to give her some more time. I thought for sure if it was just belly button (yolk sac) remnants it would have dried up & fallen off by now. It made me worry it was related to her smaller size.

I think she will be fine, just needs A little more time. Not sure what you could do about it anyways. Keep us updated!

One of Ayam Cemani chicks had her umbilical cord wrapped around her leg for the first two days; by the time I discovered it (had a hiccup in the way she hopped), it had dried like jerky and her little foot was noticably swollen. I soaked it and cut it away. Her foot looked normal the next day and she walked, ran and jumped like a normal chick. She also didn't size up like her sisters or brother and is still only about 80% as big as her sisters. She is 100% chicken, though, and does everything the others do, just on a smaller scale, lol.

Thank you so much for this story!! This gives me hope!! After the electrolytes & sugar water, she was much more active today!

Silkie (Mocha) is growing! The spot on her abdomen seems to be drying up and I can’t feel the harder spot inside any more. I still wish it would fall off and look normal but I’m praying that comes soon. For now she is eating and drinking and pooping all normal & getting around much better! Good news so far!
