I have 2 three-week old chicks, one with wry neck and one with what I think is splay leg. I keep them both together, away from the other chicks.
How do I go about treating wry neck? I know I need vitamin E and selenium, but how much do I give and how many times a day?
I also read that vitamin B complex also works; should I get that too? And should I get the vitamins that are made specifically for chickens, or would the ones for humans work?
The chick gets around and eats and drinks fine; the only thing it really struggles with is cleaning itself.
As for the other chick, is it even treatable at this point?
I noticed its leg was sticking out sideways underneath it and it couldn’t stand while it was still in the incubator, but I didn’t know anything about splay leg at the time, so I unfortunately didn’t treat it until a few days later.
I hobbled the legs with vetwrap, and it didn’t seem to help, but it also hasn’t gotten any worse. I’ve been stretching the leg out a little every day. It can’t move its leg much by itself.
If it's not splay leg what else could it be?
It gets around just fine on one leg right now, though; it gets food and water and doesn’t seem to be in pain, but can it live on just one leg?
I really don’t want to have to put it down, but I also want it to have a comfortable life. I’m not even sure how I would go about doing that; I’ve never had to put an animal down, and I don’t know of any vets near me.
And would it help anything if I gave this chick the same vitamins as the other one?
Thanks for any help!!
