Need help and advice

Replying to the last 2 messages. I have been giving her the beef liver and vitamins that you recommended. She isn’t walking, but is able to move her legs around. We are doing “exercises” and I am holding up to have her stand (supported) and massaging her and letting her pretend like she is walking. She has definitely not lost her appetite - she is eating all sorts of things, and I’m giving her electrolytes in her water.

Nice little extra ray of hope, as well! Glad your hen did well. Henrietta is quite happy and engaging with me, and my friends. She is very curious. Really doesn’t seem lethargic or unhappy at all, besides not being able to move around much (she will scoot herself around by scrambling her legs). I am not ready to give up yet. Was given a big emotional boost once I realized she was vaccinated, so that mostly took away my fear of Mareks. I take comfort in knowing that she is able to move her legs, and can flatten the toes and such. She’s just not standing yet. But that’s only been for a couple weeks, at the most.

Took my sweet Henri in to the avian vet today. He immediately said she didn’t look good, which was a downer since I thought she had been doing better over the last couple days. Thursday night, she tried to stand up and was flapping her wings to move. She did something similar Friday morning and again last night, so I went into the appointment feeling pretty good.

The vet consulted with the other doctors in the office, and they agreed that it was most likely Mareks, but could be a spinal infection. Neither one is good. I opted for medication for the next 10 days in the hopes that if it is a spinal infection that’s causing things, it will clear that up and she will get better. Staying realistic, though, that it is something more serious and it may just be a matter of time. Re-evaluating when the meds are done. Keep your fingers crossed. I really want her to pull through.

Aw I’m so sorry. I’ll pray for your sweet hen. I really hope she pulls through and begins to get better, too.

It is good that you could see the vet. It doesn’t hurt to give her more time to see if she gets better, as long as she is not suffering. If you should lose her at some point, your state vet lab can do a necropsy and test for Mareks. Here is a list of state poultry vets to contact about a necropsy:

Thank you. She doesn’t seem to be suffering. She is very alert and moving the best she can, and enjoying the pasta I made her for dinner. I really hope the meds work. We’ve become quite bonded through this whole ordeal.

That’s what always happens😭 taking care of a sick chicken does a lot to closely bond you and the chicken. I hope she makes it!
