NEED HELP ASAP Egg bound quial

How long was she egg bound for? Did you help it pass or did it come out on it's own? If she was egg bound for a very long time, she may be backed up with poop or even have developed an internal infection.

How hard was the egg shell on this egg she finally passed? Soft or hard? I know it is not easy to examine Bobwhites, but have you checked her vent for prolapse? She may have pushed so hard her insides are coming out.

How many months old is she? What protein food is she on? Does she have access to oyster shell?

Sorry for all the questions, but these will help determine why she may be having issues and what to do about it.

Try not to stress her too much. Keep an eye on her and if she is still sick tomorrow, definitely post back here with all symptoms.

Hopefully we can get her back to full health soon.

I don't know how long. She doesn't lay every day, sometimes every 2 or 3 days. She was fine this morning when I checked on her and her mate. Came home this afternoon and she was lying on the cage floor like she had pasty butt.

Yes, I helped her pass the egg. I used a hot/warm water bath and a wash cloth and pressed lightly on her tummy to help her pass the egg. Poop came out with the egg. Is that good?

The egg shell was pretty soft. I let it lie for a little while then tried to write on it for the incubator, but the pencil lead cracked the egg very easily (her other eggs have all had hard shells). The vent looks clear and I don't see anything else.

She and her mate are about 8 months old, give or take a few weeks. They are on this stuff. Its all I have been able to find around here til today. I had to order some food at Tractor Supply. I give them eggs shells every once in a while. I put them in their little cups, but they don't last long.

She is in the house in a crate for the night or 2 or 3, whatever it takes. Her mate is not happy though. She has a heat lamp on her and I have put some food and water in for her as well. She now has her eyes open, so I am taking that as a good sign. She is moving her head around too and looking. She still hasn't gotten up though, she is lying there but not like she can't breath any more.

So sorry about this hen. This food you have them on is not good enough for proper health, especially during laying season, so good that you have ordered some quail feed. Generally it is the really high protein feeds that tend to cause egg binding, but the lack of nutrients can cause this as well. And this food is lacking in a lot of vitamins and minerals quail need for good health.

You did good with warm water bath. That is exactly what to do when they are egg bound.

You need to get some oystershell at the feed store. Sometimes it comes crushed. Some feed stores sell the oystershell for automatic dispensers that is crushed really small. I think DrsFosterSmith carries crushed oystershell. If you are going to use real egg shells for calcium you will need to feed it to the hen every day, at least 2 or 3 entire egg shells a day. This calcium not only puts a hard shell on the egg, (which makes it easier to pass them), but the calcium aids in the contractions of the uterus and oviduct to move the egg out. So it is VERY important to get your hens on some good constant calcium.

For now, keep her warm, hydrated and feed her what ever she will eat. Sick or ill quail tend not to eat their regular food. So if she eats it, feed it to her for now. She is probably just exhausted from the entire ordeal, she got backed up with poop which can make them a bit sick. And handling bobwhites can stress them out to the point of shock.

So let her rest tonight. Keep her warm and dark. Inside the house is fine or outside in a quiet still air place. Don't mess with her or try to handle her.

If she is still sick in the morning, it is possible she has an internal infection. They can be egg bound for days and you don't even know it. And this can make them sick.

Keep me posted tomorrow as to how she is. Make sure to get her and your flock on a good gamebird food and plenty of oystershell to prevent this from happening again in the future.

I hope she makes a full recovery. :)

How is she this morning?

Sadly she passed this AM

I am going to move the male today to a new location. I think maybe when we moved their pen last week it may have been too close to our chicken coop? Maybe she was just not egg bound, maybe it was something more. I don't really know. I honestly thought she would make a full recovery from the way she was acting last night, but she did not.

Unfortunately unless you had a necropsy done on her, you may never know what killed her. Egg binding does kill. Diseases that kill quail coming from chickens take longer than a week to incubate and kill. So I doubt that had anything to do with her death. It was probably related to egg laying or binding.

And yes, sometimes they do look like they are going to make a full recovery, but sadly they don't. There isn't much you can do in this case. After you get the egg out, it is up to them to heal themselves. All you can do is keep them comfortable as you did.

So sorry and I hope your heavy heart can heal soon.

Thank you. I just checked with the guy that we got them from and he has some, but someone else may be getting them on Saturday. I may have to wait a little longer or see if we get any females from her eggs that I have in the incubator now. Praying that at least a few hatch. Have 25 in there, but we have never hatched quail eggs and I have to turn them myself. So we shall see.
