Need help calculating the cost of lost chickens PLEASE!

$35 is fair. What would it cost to replace your hen with a comparable hen? Or what would it cost you to buy and grow a new one? In that case, you are out the time and cost it took to grow the first hen, and now the time and cost for the secon (replacement) one. You see what I am saying? She should be glad to pay for a replacement hen that is grown, thats cheaper than paying for a chick and the time/cost to grow it.

After our county fair each fall the Agricultural school hosts an auction of poultry, rabbits and related items as a benefit to raise funds for the students to attend the FFA national convention each fall.
There were numerous young healthy pullets and mature hens sold, with the usual selling price between $15. and $35. based on age, condition and breed.
There were many producers sold with about $20 to $ 25. range being the norm.
If there was something unusual about your 9 hens- special breeding and purebred show animals, to warrant the across the board $35. number, by all means stick with it - but common hens of laying age and RI red or barred rock lineage were selling for the $20.
I'm sure you aren't looking to punish your neighbor, only to recoup your actual replacement value.

I agree with the above. In our area 20-25 for a laying hen of pure breed.
10-15 for a layer of mixed breed.
free-10 for a rooster.

In a court case most likely you are only going to get the replacement cost. If you figure the chick price, all the feed, then the eggs you get over the lifetime of the hen; they would be worth about
100.00 per bird. Fair in my opinion...but a judge is only going to go with common replacement cost. You need to get some copies of ads or statements from sellers stating a price and show this woman.
