need help! chicken antifungal

Correct, tea tree oil is toxic to birds. Do not use!

An OTC antifungal such as lotrimin or miconazole should be okay; just hold the bird tightly and do your best to keep it out of the eyes, use a swab to apply. Original listerine and iodine have antifungal propertis, as do gentian violet and camphophenique. But I'd try lotrimin first. BTW, nystatin is practically useless; read the material that comes with the med. Very low percentage of effectiveness; I'm surprised that it is allowed, and commonly prescribed. There are much more effecive meds.

The lamisil and fluconszole are topical creams and shouldn’t drip into eyes. Make sure comb, beak and face get a good cleaning. You may need a helper to hold bird wrapped in towel to assist with this, especially if your birds are not handled frequently. My roo is handled constantly and he doesn’t always enjoy face washes, so until you are comfortable with this, probably get some assistance.

First step is to cleanse the area. Mix a tiny bit of mild soap, diluted in water (no need to see bubbles for it to be effective). Use clean, soft paper towels or cotton swabs. Wipe gently over affected areas, away from eyes. Clean the comb, face, beak, nostrils, turning to clean section of moistened towel frequently or using a new swab. Moisten another towel or swab and repeat, wiping but not scrubbing, until area is clean. Use clean towel or swabs dipped in plain water to wipe away any soap. Do this several times as rinse step. Be very careful and gentle around eyes. Use dabs and short or long strokes in the direction of feathers, or between fold of skin. Do not rub in a back and forth motion.

Dry thoroughly, with soft, dry towel or dry swab(s). Again, using gentle strokes and dabs to remove any moisture. Do not rub.

Using a clean cotton swab, apply very, very thin layer of chosen ointment to affected area. Use a new swab for each section. You should barely be able to see the ointment when applied. A little goes a long way. You will need to repeat this daily for up to 14 days for improvement. Fungus and mold, skin and mucus infections in general, do not clear up “in a couple days”. Diligence and consistency in cleansing and treatment are what will win the day.

Sunshine also kills these things, so definitely have some outdoor time to supplement the bathing and ointment. Good luck!

Unrefined, virgin coconut oil is an anti microbial with anti fungal properties. Do not use refined coconut oil because it has been cooked and does not have the same topical benefits. Coconut will be easier on the eye area. They can eat it, too! This helps with any fungus or nasties that may be in the digestive tracts.

Calendula (marigold) is great for soothing and healing skin conditions, irritation from infection. Used in conjunction with an antifungal it can facilitate wound healing. Must be used with a carrier oil, so best to buy as an ointment or premixed balm.
