This morning my Barred Rock was perfectly fine and a few hours ago I noticed that she was breathing funny. She kind was opening her mouth and gasping sort of but with out the noise really. I have a video that I took with my phone but I can't it to load. Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong with her. I added her to my flock this past Tuesday along with a australorp rooster and a few days before that I had added a red sex link to our two girl that I had since they were chicks. They are all about four months old.

When it's hot they tend to open mouth to help breathe better. And they also do when stressed or scared of other birds. If wings are drooping and temps. are hot that could possibly be the cause.

If she is not showing any wheezing or coughing or watery eyes I would hesitate to treat for a supposed disease. And worming would not cause her to breathe with mouth open. Being thin with pale comb is more a worm symptom.

I had a similar situation the other day with a 4.5 week old. Some suggested a crop issue. My baby was shooting her head up like she was gasping for air, open beaked and there were little bubbles coming out of her nose and mouth. I was just lightly messaging her throat just it seems like she was choking or something. It lasted a couple of hours and then she was fine, but after that I did some research on crop issues like the posters suggested and it could be a serious thing if that's what it is..

Did you quarantine your additions for at least a week before introducing them to the flock? If you didn't it could be experiencing a respiratory issue.

As far as I know, some kind of gapeworm can cause birds open mouth frequently like yawning.
