Hi there. I'm from San Marcos, TX(just between Austin and San Antonio) and I need help choosing a breed that will mesh well into our family. We need a breed that will do well in the heat of the summer, which can get blistering in the middle of the day, and be a good layer. We're also limited by the city ordinances to only eight chickens and NO roosters. If there are any breeds that you could suggest that would be great. After looking at the choosing a chicken breed article I'm leaning towards the white faced black spanish bantam so any additional info on them or alternative choices would be great.

Rather unusual choice. The inherent problem is that this breed is not known for egg laying. Being bantam will mean small eggs. This is contrary to the traits you are looking for. You might have a tough time finding this breed and when you do, pay a premium price.

From my experience, I would suggest Barred Rock. I have heard that Buff Orpington is even more docile.

Heat is tough on any breed. Make sure there is lots of water and shade, and the coop is well vented.
