Hi! I am somewhat new to raising chickens. I have had my three hens for about 3 years now.

Everything had been going great. In mid-January, two of the three started laying again for the year. One day, the third appeared sluggish. She wasn't very interested in eating and just moped around slowly. The next day she was fine.

But since then, she has only laid soft-shelled eggs. She would lay about two per week (she usually lays about 3-5 hard-shelled eggs per week). Then about two weeks later, she stopped laying altogether.

All three birds are on layer pellets. I've supplemented their diet with extra calcium and protein, in addition to some veggie snacks they receive daily. But after about a two-week hiatus from laying soft-shelled eggs, she laid another today.

I live in Los Angeles County, where we were under quarantine a few years ago for HPAI. I am a bit worried about LPAI and HPAI. All available data online seems to focus on HPAI. I am worried to call the vet for fear of a "cull everyone" order from the government agency that handles this type of thing. I want to be socially responsible, but not rash.

Could it be LPAI? Or maybe there is something else going on? I would love to hear the opinions of other experienced BYC contributors!

Thanks,
Lisa

Get some calcium citrate, the same kind as for people. Pop a pill in her beak, every day, for a week. If she has calcium issues, this can help. If that's not the problem, it won't hurt.
