I have 2 peahens, about 6 yrs old. One of them decided that she wanted to make her nest in the side of the yard reserved for the dogs. She was lucky the first several days, as the dogs only got her eggs and chased her back over the fence to her side of the yard, but last Thursday night, she was discovered under a tree by several dogs. My husband heard her honk and rushed out to get her, but the damage had already been done. She had 2 dogs on her, and feathers were everywhere. She took off in a panic and we couldn't find her until the sun came up several hours later. I managed to catch her and her chest area was covered in ants. I used a hose and rinsed her off and then was able to assess the damage. She has a couple puncture wounds on her chest, but my main concern is her chest area itself. She's basically been skinned. I think so many feathers came off at once, that the skin came off with it. Except for a strip of skin here or there, she is all muscle. Her breast tissue hasn't been split, and she wasn't bleeding. There is a small marble sized sic (an air sac, maybe? Never saw one before). That is exposed, and it was going in and out as she was breathing. We cleaned her up the best we could, she doesn't like to be handled, and she was willing to struggle. We did a quick first aid so we could release her in a cage and let her be. I gave her 3cc of Pen G sub q on Thursday morning. She is currently in my barn, safe from other critters, in a puppy play pen with shavings. I don't think she's eating, and it's hard to tell if she's drinking. I did try to give her some water on Saturday morning, but she fought me, so I didn't try anymore. I don't want to fight her and make things worse. We catch her every day and spray her wounds with Iodine Wound Spray and I have some Wonder Dust.
I need some first aide help. I want to wash her wound off, and take more time treating her, but she hates it. She's not wild, she just prefers not to be touched.
Are peacocks pretty hardy? We've had chickens get attacked by dogs before and they lived when I thought for sure they would be dead by morning. My chickens were tough! So I'm really hoping my peahen is tough. If that little sac of (something) is an air sac, what can I do about it? It's exposed to the air.
Can I wash her wound off? Should I cut the surrounding feathers so I can have access to the wound? Or should I leave it? Her chest is probably exposed the width of my hand. Upon checking her today, she's not bleeding, but some of her tissue is starting to get necrotic. A little slimy and stinky.
All suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!
