I got 4 chicks from a straight run and I would like some help gendering 1 of them. Ranger is obviously a rooster, but I just can't tell about Flappy since its comb is not as developed as ranger and it's tail seems to go up instead of down, yet Flappy's comb is much larger than the obvious pullet (Brownie) that I got from the run. Any thoughts?? I also need help gendering the 1 barred rock (Rocky or Roxy depending of sex), but can't get a good picture.

Thanks

Flappy needs a few more weeks to be sure, but is looking a bit suspicious. Your barred Rock is male. His white bars are too wide and his black bars are too thin, for it to be female.

I would say Flappy is a cockerel since the base of his comb is pink. Some pullets can have larger combs, but the pink is a sure sign I think. You'll definitely know in a couple weeks. Watch for the cockerels to develop waddles.

Unfortunately, the hutch I was keeping these chicks in was not as predator proof as I thought. A raccoon was able to pull their legs out of the 1" mesh and bite them off. All but the Red headed pullet we killed. I ran outside just in time to scare the coon as it had her in its clutches. This about 7 months ago, but our "Brownie" is still missing most of her toes, though she is the sweetest little bird and is already laying rather consistently.

I'll try to post some pictures of our "lone survivor" now.
