So the vet ordered me to give penicillin to my rooster, I was successful a couple of times but recently I inject him and I get a lot of resistance and I can’t push the plunger in at all. When I take it out and try to push it some clear liquid come out of the top of the needle and it still won’t budge am I injection the wrong place? Help please!!

Yeah the vet showed me how he instructed me to give him two shots a day alternating the breast muscles. I did it the day before and yesterday but all day today I’ve been having trouble
Did it get worked out? What size needle were you using? I'm having similar with a 27 guage needle, maybe I need bigger.

Just for clarification - are you saying that even when you are not injecting the bird you are having trouble moving the plunger? Or are you saying that you can ONLY move the plunger when not injecting the bird - that once you have inserted the needle into the breast THEN you get resistance??

Yes, it is just wehn I put the needle in it is really hard to push the plunger. I was just successful with a 22 guage needle but I really had to push it hard and it finally shot in there. I've only ever givin little insulin shots in people and they just go right in.

I am not a vet so these are just "ideas" - but here goes:

It's possible when you are penetrating the skin that a small debris of skin or tissue is lodging in the needle - and that this debris is then creating the initial resistance?

It's possible your needle, once inserted, is resting too close to cartilage or tissue that doesn't easily give way to allow for insertion of the fluid?

I recently had to inject my birds in the breast - a penicillin type antibiotic - and my vet gave me the option of either intramuscular or subcutaneous. IN the end I found it easier for me, and less stressful on the birds, to inject subcutaneously. You might want to enquire with your vet if that is an option for you??

1) I considered, but no resistence when not in the bird like it was clearing an obstruction. Still, maybe...
2) I tried a few different locations in the breast and the result seemed the same
3) I would like something subcutaneous I think, they say don't go very deep at all with the IM so maybe it won't matter. wierd how much pressure it took to finally get it. Thanks for responding.

could you be going too deep?

I've never done IM so I dont have any answers.

You have to draw in air into the syringe before inserting into the vial of penicillin. and then push the air into the vial before drawing out the dose.
