Need help Identifying Breeds!

The first chick is not barred.
Barring is white stripes running across the feathers. The chick in the first photo has the stripes running the long way of the feathers.

Other details: Barred Rocks should have yellow on the bottoms of their feet and up the edges of their toes, but I think that chick has white instead. The colors/markings on the face also look a bit wrong, although it's harder for me to be sure about that because facial markings do vary a bit within any given breed or color.

About names: Plymouth Rock is the name of a breed that comes in many colors. Barred Plymouth Rocks are one color, White Plymouth Rocks another color, and so on. People often skip the "Plymouth" and just call them Barred Rocks, White Rocks, and so forth.


Mixed up flocks can be fun, but I agree it can make them hard to identify or describe!

The color makes me think of Silver Penciled or Silver Partridge, but I think the chick is most likely a mix rather than pure anything.

No matter what it is, that chick is looking really nice as it grows up!

Never heard of those! I'll look them up. I feel like this one is growing slowly because the smaller chicks are nearly the same size now and they are only 3 weeks! (I hope they are hens but im not sure at all) Either that or this black one will just stay tiny for 6 weeks..

^Here are a few hatchery pages that have pictures of the color I meant. The exact arrangement of the colors in each feather can shift a bit as they grow (that's new feathers growing with different patterns than the old feathers, not the colors moving within an already-grown feather.)

I don't know about the size. Some chickens definitely do grow faster than others, and the ones that end up biggest are not always the ones that grow fastest as chicks. I guess you'll see over the next few months

I love these patterns! Thank you for the link and all this info. Hopefully she turns out that pretty too. So maybe the slow chick will be a big one That's good to know. I can't wait to see what they will look like as adults. Time is flying so fast. You've been extremely helpful

Yeah, I've got all kinds of those for sure. It happens when you have a rooster too. But on the bright side if they grow up to be hens that's always a plus.

I wish you luck for reals. I ended with 2 roosters that were suppose to be females from. Feed store. I was super irritated,but my rooster Joe Dirt is an amazing rooster,and just a very good protector of his 30+ hens.

On average, the ones that are biggest at young ages are also biggest when they finish growing. But there are enough exceptions that I wouldn't bet either way.

Small or slow-growing chicks could end up bigger, or smaller, or in the middle, by the time they finish growing. When someone does know the breed, that at least gives some grounds for guessing adult sizes, but even then some will turn out to be smaller or larger than their breed is supposed to be.
