The first chick is not barred.
Barring is white stripes running across the feathers. The chick in the first photo has the stripes running the long way of the feathers.
Other details: Barred Rocks should have yellow on the bottoms of their feet and up the edges of their toes, but I think that chick has white instead. The colors/markings on the face also look a bit wrong, although it's harder for me to be sure about that because facial markings do vary a bit within any given breed or color.
About names: Plymouth Rock is the name of a breed that comes in many colors. Barred Plymouth Rocks are one color, White Plymouth Rocks another color, and so on. People often skip the "Plymouth" and just call them Barred Rocks, White Rocks, and so forth.
Mixed up flocks can be fun, but I agree it can make them hard to identify or describe!
