Hello!

I have five two and a half week-old chicks that I am not absolutely sure what they are. The batch I got was mixed brown-egg layers, and I am pretty sure I had six barred rocks, five RIR's, and then these 5 guys. Two were very, very pale yellow when I first got them, two were slightly darker yellow, and the fifth is reddish, but not nearly as red as the RIR's that I had had, and nowhere near as dark as my two older RIR's. I have two older Buff Orps, and these don't look quite like my older gals at that age, but ... not sure!

Any possibilities?

The first three pics have the little gal (I hope) that is lighter than my RIR's, but not by much.

One of the very pale yellow ones with the potential RIR? Followed by other pics of the two pale yellow ones.

Now the pics of the two that are darker orange/yellow, but not as dark as the gal in the first pics:

Thanks!!

The first 3 could be RIR or New Hampshire reds, and the yellow ones could be buff Orpington's!

What part of upstate NY are you at?
If they do turn out to be RIR's and BO's, I just find it fascinating that they don't like like my two older RIR's and BO's at the same age. It will be interesting to see!

I am near Oneonta, NY! You? :)

Your light red ones are probably production reds and your yellows could be buff orps or lighten up and be white rocks or leghorns
What are production reds? The hatchery's description said they would definitely be one of the brown egg layer breeds they sell, and if production red is a generic red bird, that doesn't appear to be one they sell. But I certainly don't know what hatcheries might do. If they are a white bird, when might they change color? They are three weeks on Wednesday and show no signs of that. But they seem so much lighter than my BO's were at the same age.

Thanks!! This is all very fascinating.

My production reds looked like yours at that age and within a week to 2 weeks they were red. My hen is sweet but the roos were mean to other birds and had to go. I sent them to the freezer at 15 weeks. I didn't order them they were added for extra warmth suppose to be all males but I got one girl :)
