Need help in identifying these chicks

I am chick sitting for these 21 chicks while a friend of mine is on a cruise. We are going to split them up 50/50 when he returns.

I have done some research but it is hard to tell sometimes the breed. These are about 3-4 weeks old I believe. Any help in identifying the breed of these will be appreciated.


This one may be a rooster and is the only one like it in the bunch. His colors makes me think he maybe a rooster.


I believe the white one is a Leghorn, the red ones could be Red Star sex-link, the dark one in the middle facing the camera is possibly a Barred Rock or even a Dominique?? The underbelly was a little lighter color when I first got them a week ago. There legs are yellow little wash of grey, and they do have a spot on top of their head and the colors are checkered, mainly black but with white tip feathers.

I have no idea what the black/white spotted one with grey legs is (it is the one in the top of the picture). There is a better picture of him below.

The reds are hatchery Rhode Island Reds (Production Red). Sex links have white leakage especially around the hackle so look for that if they turn out to be Red Stars (or any numerous red sex link combination out there). The black with white stripes is a Barred Rock. All cuckoo pattern birds have the white spot but with actual lines it's a hatchery Barred Rock. The white bird you'll know when it grows out. It's likely a Leghorn as you said, it could also be a White Rock. Leghorns are smaller framed and sport huge combs. If a Rock then will be of same size as your Barred.

Which hatchery did these get ordered from? They like to add what is termed here "packing peanuts" with small orders to keep them warm and some advertise free rare breed bird with every order. They are always male, which shows how accurate at sexing hatcheries truly are. It's a great way for them to unload the multitude of cockerels. I'd only be taking a wild guess at this one. If you can get a better pic of it's comb and few more of the bird folks here will know what it is. I can't tell if it has a rose comb or what. Also knowing the hatchery ordered from will narrow down the choices of what it could be.

Oh, and Welcome to BYC and being a new chicken owner. They're better than cats. Take care of themselves excepting cleaning littler and needing food and water but they make your breakfest.

The 1st pic looks like an EE , I'm leaning toward female.
The white one could be a White Rock or Leghorn.
The black and white looks like a Barred Rock.
The red and white ones areRed Sex Links.
I see a few more EEs in the pictures too.
The last pic looks like a EE cockeral, I would be very wary of bringing that one home because MOST EEs that color are males.

I agree, except with the first bird-- I think that its an Easter Egger.

Thanks for all of the feedback.

I did talk to the person who bought these and he did say he went through BYC but believe they came from Ideal since they are about 60 miles away. Also he was not sure of what he got so I am sure he ordered 15 Assorted Chicks.

They sent 21 so I would not be surprised if they added some extra roosters in there for warmth.

I have noticed that the EE are all much larger than the other ones.

I am sure when he comes to pick them up on Tuesday, he will be disappointed with all of the roosters. He only wanted hens but I can understand why they shipped the roosters.

The dilemma now is what are we going to do with all of the roosters.
