I have a chicken who lay on the coop floor for about an hour or so, then got up and went out and foraged normally. Today she was on the nest. She wasn't pumping, nor showing distress. Her comb and wattles are red. Then she went out and foraged again. Is she egg bound? Should I just proceed as if she were? She is not droopy, her wings don't droop, she doesn't waddle, but she appears to want to lay and hasn't.

thanks for your help

"Your chicken will appear like she is trying to lay an egg.Abdominal straining is a symptom of being egg bound, along with a hard abdomen. Pay attention to your hen's feces. Egg bound hens will often have watery diarrhea" I just looked it up. It appears that she may be egg bound.

The best way to treat an egg bound hen: The easiest thing to do is to carefully bring the hen into the house and soak her in a plastic tub in your bathtub. Submerge her lower body and vent in warm water with some Epsom salts for about 20 minutes, gently rubbing her abdomen.

Hi and thanks. It's currently 47 outside and sunny. I'd say about 10 deg cooler in the coop. I keep my birds in the garage. plenty of space, but they forage outside all day. Now I can't find her to check her vent... I think I've made her skittish. I have the water ready. just need to find the patient.

Hi. My bird is well. Thank you. I got her April 25. She went into hiding before I could get her into a bath because I was giving her too much attention. I thought, well, dead bird in the morning. But she came out of the coop with the others and seems ok.

My hen had some of the classic signs of egg binding, sitting for hours on the floor or in the nest box, but not the others, pumping, watery stool, etc. I guess the upshot of this kerfuffle is that if you suspect a hen is egg bound don't hover around wringing your hands, examine her immediately by checking her vent. If I had done that right away I could have saved some human anxiety and chicken skittishness.

Thanks for your replies
