Need help picking a breed for a new duck owner question on post 17

I <3 Cayugas why? becuase, they're friendly, get along with chickens,go broody(good mamas),and they're beautiful with that beatle green shine also woth purple and blue on them but their main color is black(blends into the night

),also eggs are a cool color and are good for many ways of eating!

Cayugas! I have a pair that lives with my chickens/share a coop. Since she started laying 2 months ago there have only been 4 days my duck didn't lay an egg and they are very nice size eggs. Beautiful birds that are also pretty calm. I would highly recommend!

Anconas are supposed to be calm, are excellent foragers, very good layers, and will go broody. And they are pretty. Each has its own markings, so you can tell them apart. If you google ancona and the name Carol Deppe, you will find a great essay written by her about the breed that puts forth an excellent argument for them being THE breed to raise.

I'm a *brand new* owner (we got ours today!). We bought one Cayuga and one Rouen. We were told both were personable and had great temperaments and the Cayuga was a great layer...Rouen..I guess not so much. I was soo very close getting a Pekin, but I've heard they like to make themselves heard....great personalities though as well. After handling and "playing" with out new ones, and as much as I love my Rouen,....(and even though I special ordered a Pekin) I think I'll be going back and getting another Cayuga! Beautiful ducklings and even more so as adults. I got my Rouen more for looks and temperament than anything...she does love snuggling and preening my beard...I may never have to trim again!

I digress...I'd have to follow suit with those that suggest the Cayuga! Our little one is already the more calm, less skittish one of the two and they are a very hardy, great laying duck....from what I've researched and been told. I hope this helps!

I'm sooo glad I found this group! I know I'll be turning to it many time in the upcoming months while we acclimate our yard to our new additions!

WELSH HARLEQUIN!!!!!!! For eggs and beauty above all others.

CAYUGA for beauty and cuddliness (provided you spend time with them).

I have rouen, khaki campbell, cayuga and maybe runner now but I have to say even at this duckling age they are not nearly as sweet as my WH and Cayugas were.

My Cayuga is a year old and will still let my 9 yr old hold and pet her.

She's LOUD when she wants attention though.

Thanks for all the help I think I am going to go with a couple of cayugas and a couple Welsh harlequins. Next question where is the best place to order the ducks from. Thanks again for all the help.

For pet quality birds, (sexed or unsexed) and the options of replacements if any are lost in shipping --> metzer
For good quality or even show quality birds --> Holderreads

I got my Cayugas from McMurray Hatchery. Keep in mind if you don't want the min. Of 15 you'll have to find someone to go in on an order with you. Good luck! Ducks are a lot of fun.
