I have a bunch of chicks coming and in order to make room I want to rehome some of my current flock. All of them are hatchery stock, but are reliable layers and nice enough birds, I guess. Some of them have an irritating tendency to eat eggs laid outside the nest boxes (which others have an annoying tendency to do) but won't eat the ones in the coop. Anyway, I would like to sell them, probably on craigslist since there are very few BYCers in my area. I am not terribly interested in making money, but it would be nice to offset some of the cost of the new chicks. I just have no idea what a hen should sell for. Should I give a discount if someone takes all the ones offered? What do you think?

Thats up to you but in my area (so cal) on craigslist laying hens go for about 15-25 dollars depending on who it is but at Diamond B hay and feed they sell Roo's and laying hens for 10-12 dollars so it all depends on what you think they are worth

I am in the Houston, TX area and hens around here go for $15-$20. You could give a discount if someone buys multiple but there is such a large demand for laying hens that I think you won't have a problem selling all of them.

how old are they? here 6 months to a 18 months is 8.00-12.00 after 18 months prices go down really fast 8.00-3.00. after 2 years they are pretty much free or 1.00-2.00

some breeds go for more around here people go nuts for barred rock or EEs or cochins around here. alot depends on breed more than age.
yes i normally do a one for all price just to get gone. plus if they have to drive a bit to your house you need to make it worth while.

The ones I am selling are Columbian and Silver Penciled Wyandottes. I think they're 2 years old now, but still laying 4-6 eggs each a week in the spring. I don't light my coop, so they get a nice rest from laying in the winter, so I am sure they will continue to lay for a while.
I think I will try asking $10 each or $30 for all 4 and see what I get. If no one is interested, I will lower the price. Mostly I am thinking of the discount to make sure they can go together. I wouldn't want any of them to end up alone.

Thanks everyone!

I paid $7 each for my layers, and I thought that was very high. I think they are red sex links, and they lay a lot of eggs, and they are big. As someone on this site noticed, they have had their beaks trimmed, so they were probably in a commercial laying situation. A year or two ago, you could pick the same hens up for around $2 or so. A friend was watching the auctions around, and the same hens I have can be bought for $5 each, with a minimum of 100 hens. To just get a few, they were going for around $10, I went to a guy getting them from the supplier, and got just a few for right in the middle, $7.
