After the pip, it can still take several hours before they punch out...

After the initial pip breaking through the egg they can take 24 hours- or sometimes longer until they start to unzip the egg. During this time they are absorbing the yolk and blood from the vein network. Its the time where your patience is really tested.

With the unknown about when the mother started sitting and if she continued to lay a few more eggs after that day- you may find that the hatch is drawn out over several days. When you think they are all finished- it would be a good idea to candle the eggs to check for any remaining signs of life before tossing any left over eggs.

Nice to thing that although these guys have lost their mom they still have a chance to grow up and live the life of a normal wild duck. So many other people may have just smashed up the nest after what happened to the mother. stitch81 you have done a wonderful thing to try and save these babies. My fingers are crossed for you and the little ones.

6 pips now! Still no breakthroughs... Being patient is very hard...been camped out with a book next to the hatcher today. I'm about ready to go to bed completely convinced that these duckies are just waiting for me to leave the hatcher before they start busting out...lol

We have 8 pips now, but still no breakthroughs. It's been 20 hours since the first pip... I'm starting to worry. I was up several times during the night checking for progress, and aside from the 2 new pippers, there has been no change. Trying very, very, hard to just sit on my hands and leave them be.

9 of 10 have pipped, no breakthroughs. The first one to pip has now done nothing for the past 27 hours.... I risked a very quick candling since the shell wasn't broken through. He's still moving. How long can they last with just the air in the air cell?

It is now 33 hrs since the first pip and still nothing more has happened. 9 of the 10 eggs have pipped, but only cracked the egg. There are no holes in the shells. I very quickly candled the first pipper at 27 hours (no holes in the shell) and he was moving around. Humidity is up at 74% temp is 100. Any advice. Is it normal for a duckling to take THIS LONG after pipping before doing anything else??
