Need help, Serama chicks died

Did you crush up their food? sometimes the crumble is just too big for them to eat when they re so small. I learned by losing 3 babies. Also they are much harder to hatch than other chickens. I have been working with shipped Serama eggs if I get 2 babies from 15 eggs I am happy. I had another one hatch yesterday so now my Seraama flock is at 13. Hopefully more to come.

I've hatched hundreds of Seramas and this is what I've found. They do better if they are brooded separately. They tend to get run over by older chicks. Also almost everyone I have gets pasty butt where all my other chicks don't. It would be wise to just cut or pull the little fluff around the vent as soon as they are ready to put them in the brooder. I used to grind all my feed in a coffee grinder but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Great news! My girls have hatched three new babies - and so far so good. They were hatched on 11-11-11. Yeahhhhhh... letting the mommies brood and adding additional heat worked. I also crushed crumble for the new babies.

Keep your fingers crossed.

I read on the SCNA site that grind their food and also put play sand in it to help with the pasty butt issue. I have done this and on my 2nd batch and no pasty butts at all. I also keep them in a very small tote the first week so they stay warmer and also can find their food and water easier. After the first week I move them to a bigger tote because they grow so fast. So far so good following those directions. Good luck everyone
