We have a Dominique Roo who is about 4 and a half months old. 2 days ago I caught him lying in the sun in the run- which is unusual (normally they are all in the shady area) so I ran in and checked on him. He got up and ran to the other side of the run. Put fresh water in (we do this daily) and he went and drank, but I noticed his poop was a dark greenish color. decided to keep an eye on him and yesterday he seemed fine but his tail was droopy. Today I let everyone out of the run to free range. He came right out, but stayed near the fence. He kept preening his feathers but wasn't going after the bugs and grass like he usually does. I picked him up and he just sat in my lap and went to sleep. I decided to bring him inside and give him some antibiotic water. He seems to be breathing heavy, (as in every breath his back end lifts up) and his eyes are a bit droopy. I gave him some electrolytes mixed with antibiotics (Pennchlor 64) as well as some yogurt mixed with his feed. Could not find his crop so I am assuming he hasnt been eating and he has lost weight. I forcefed him the water and some of the yogurt. I also put a small cup of plain feed in there which he HAS started to eat, but hes still not drinking. The rough breathing has calmed down (I am guessing because hes out of the hot weather) but his beak is still open like hes gasping. Did not see a blockage or anything in his mouth. When he pooped it came out all white, watery diahrrea, but I am assuming that is from me forcefeeding him the plain yogurt and water. I think he is running a fever, but I am not sure how to tell, what does a average chickens temp run, what is the best way to take said temp, and what can I do for him if he is running one? Dom is such a sweet roo, and I don't want to see him crossing the rainbow bridge any time soon... Can anyone help?

Any help or advice is appreciated!!!

going to make some scrambled egg and see how that goes... anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

What are his main symptoms? You said he has a fever? If so than for sure we are dealing with some kind of bacterial infection that happened to one of my chicks and I took her to a vet her fever was so high that they couldn't read it so they gave me baytril injectable or it comes in liquid and capsules you can possibly buy this at a tractor supply? If not maybe you can get tylan injectable it also comes in a water soluble form or even penecillan? Ask the feed store? If they don't have any of thease things then I whould take him to a vet and don't try any tetracyclin type stuff at the feed store because it not strong enough I'm afraid you need some potent antibiotics. Just don't wait too long because he will get very weak and if he has a fever may suffer brain damage. Don't let him lie in the sun he's doing this because he has the chills from the fever it could dehydrate him keep him hydrated buy some pedialite for kids and mix it half strenght in water and keep giving him this to drink make sure he stays hydrated and try to give him something like dryed meal worms cause they are a very high energy food you can get then at the feed store or walmart in the wild bird feed section I'm sure he has a secondary bacterial infection and if you star him on antibiotics he will be just fine good luck

would cordid work? I can get some of that. He seems to be perking up some, and hes eating. Have not noticed him drinking so he is still getting the electrolyte/antibiotic water through a syringe. I'm not sure if hes running a fever or not as I have never dealt with this before :( although now that it has cooled off he seems to be breathing less heavy and his beak isnt open when he breathes now...

Well this sounds like a secondary bacterial infection so corid whould not help him as this is for coccidia treatment and he has an infection so I whould get him an actual antibiotic like one of the ones I mentioned? You said you have him on an antibiotic? Which one? Also keep him warm as his body will use more energy trying to stay warm and that isint good for him right now.

Okay the normal temperature for a chicken is 105-107f or 40.6-41.7c,try to cheak his temperature place it into his vent and wait a min then check the reading repeat to make sure its acurate if he has a temp you need to act fast with one of those antibiotic I mentioned and keep forcing him to drink its very important let me know how he is

His temp is 105.2 checked it 3 times. He seemed to be much better when I got home from work, he was eating on his own and standing fine. I went to the store and came back and he started flopping around. I think he had a seizure. Now he's in shock (judging by his eyes) We have him under a heat lamp. I cant afford to get anything stronger than the Chlortetracycline HCI that I have. I gave him some water mixed with honey in a syringe and he seemed to perk up a bit. Is there anything else I can possibly do? I am afraid that we need to start saying our goodbyes. I never thought I could love a Roo so much... please tell me there is something I can do for my baby!!

Only thing I can sugest is tylan ingectable or you can get it in the soluble form as well its about 50 dollars or some penecillan g I don't know how much that one is.do you know anyone who might sell you some antibiotic a friend with chickens of there own? You can try to get him a pack of dried meal worms this will give him an enormous amount of energy you can even buy thease at walmart in the wild bird section this and keeping him hydrated will really help but don't know why he had a seizure very strange I will start researching this for you right now don't lose hope try to get one of thease antibiotics

just checked his temp again after he had been sitting under the light... it was 107.3... Took him out and hes laying on the couch... The Corid I was going to try to get is from a friend who has chickens. But they dont have anything else. I am at a loss here. I dont get paid until friday :(

He just pooped, it was mostly white with a small bit of bright/dark green... it's good that its no longer all white... right?
