LONG POST.... LOTS OF INFORMATION
I tend to ramble so I will try to keep it to the point. HA!! I really do need some insight though
My girl, Chicken Little is sick. About 2 months ago (ish) when the grass reappeared after a hard winter, She went crazy on the new shoots and got an impaction. I am a bad chick'n mom and didn't notice until she had sour crop. We drained her and fixed her up. We kept her inside for about 5 days. Soft food , probiotic yogurt, ect ect ect We used monistat/canesten as per the info we sifted through, from this site and others. It worked.
She seemed all good, but has not laid an egg since. I have chalked it up to her being 3, or maybe the trauma of this last little bit. (We had to move in oct while she was in a hard moult, then 2 months after dogs broke in and killed 2 of her flock and had her by the comb trying to pull her through a fence....) I have checked her and not eggbound ( I'm not sure who is more traumatized from that little experience , her or myself)
I've been keeping my eye on her since...
About two weeks ago, I noticed she wasn't feelin' quite herself. Still hangin' with her girls and eating. Just not as much. I felt her crop in the am and noting really in there except like a bit of pudding/sand type feeling stuff. Not enough that I was overly concerned. Then She got an impaction. With held food 24 hrs ,massaged, oil, watered, more massage and it seemed to go away. We brought her in during this. She emptied , we kept her in a few more days. She seemed fine.
Back out she went. Mistake. Some how she ended up with sour crop about a week after the impaction, as clearly we didn't have it fully clear. I thought she was clear, Rookie mistake.
. She doesn't seem to have sour crop but Every time she eats now she seems to get a bit of an impaction. We've brought her back in and is on soft foods. She doesn't have pendulum crop from what I can tell. It seems in the right spot. She was already loosing some weight now it's worse. We have crushed up layer pellets, oatmeal, egg yolk. Canned doggy food , meal worms. She won't really eat. She will eat a bit at night. I can get an eggyolk in her mixed with water, because I can not tell if she is drinking enough water. I'm having to hold the dish for her and kinda hand feed her because she seems to not touch her food on her own. Pecks at it but not really....
Her comb is bright deep cherry red. And Flopped right over . Has been this whole two weeks . Now it seems to be taking on a purpley hue in the tips ( ungh scary and just started today while I was at work)
She is vaccinated, No other flock member is presenting any symptoms or anything like Chicken Little.
No discharge from the nose or ears. No Swelling in either as far as I can tell.
She's semi hunched, like neck scrunching.
Tail 3/4 throttle up, that trows me off. But also sometimes down, then up,then down....
Mud butt, ( I get that , so she is getting some nutrients)
Lethargic, but still moving.
She wont really eat. Losing weight.
She wants to be with her crew but we have her isolated so she cant eat any hard stuff/grasses, in a big doggy kennel out in the run so she can be with her girls. We were worried about her getting depressed on top of being sick. We Bring her in to sleep at night.
We thought maybe we were starving her by accident by having her on egg yolks and apple sauce for 3 days. But the impaction was a bit stubborn. And would not break up. I called the vet to bring her in on day 3. He told me I was doing everything he would do, and not to bring her in.
We were gonna do the operation we found, but fork around!!! I don't know if I could slice her open with only topical numbing stuff.. I couldn't do that to her.... She is empty now, still that forking sludgy stuff at the very bottom
It's not Merks or coccidosilliocios. ( you know what I mean) Not respiratory from what I can tell. (One girl had Bronchitis a time back. Only knew from the wonky eggs.)
They are wormed regularly.
There are a lot more wild birds in the new place, which concerns me, But again no other chicken is exhibiting any symptoms of anything. Not even mud butt. .. My head is going to explode at all the info I have been looking at .
Dr.Google is no help. Everything is cancer and shes dying. I am so lost!!!
How do I know how to help! I'm no chicken whisperer. I'm pretty intuitive and empathic but I can not figure this out...
Should we get a feeding tube and flush some warm water the tip her over??
How long should I try to fix her?? I don't want her to suffer
I'm struggling with this. She seems to have a little figting spirit in her.Just when I think shes going down hill, she perks up and is bright eyed. She sleeps a lot. But is that from being in a kennel for 5 days now? I"M LOSING MY MIND OVER THIS AND NEED ADVICE!!!! PLLLEEEAAASSSEEEE
I know I really rambled but I felt the more information ya'll have the better..
I really truly appreciate the help!!
It' seems I only post when I have some type of issue. But I lurk the snot out of this place hahaaa..
Happy Canada Day Long Weekend my peeps !! ( see what I did there hahaaa)
