I bought 2 chicks from my local produce store, the sighn said mixed chicks and ducklings. The shop assistant couldn’t identify the breeds or sexes. I’ve identified that the black chick is a Maran based off of her markings. I’m still unsure on what the yellow chick is. Also if anyone could take a guess at their sex that would be great. I’ve named the black one Raven and the yellow one Starfire, Raven has a very placid and calm personality, she has developed quite an attachment to me. Starfire makes a lot of noise and is very energetic. Starfire has light brownish/red feathers with dark brown/black speckles, she/he also has black tips on her wings that you can only see when she/he spreads them out.

Would there be any distinct markings between a Maran and Australorp? Raven has sort of a brown speckling on back of wings and head, white tips on underwings and feathers around legs are quite long. Also her comb is currently pink but the tips of them are black.

At this point anything can pop up. After that first molt, the brown will either stay or go, and so will the white. The dark wash over the legs is what made me think austrolorp. My understanding of marans is that they have very white legs.

Our Australorp has a yellow spot on her head. The grey legs made me think Barred Rock pullet, but even my BR have a yellow dot.... Soooooo....

I'm new to chickens, but after I picked up a sick chick from TSC, the manager gives them to me every time I'm in there now, and we've turned into sort of a rehabilitation center. Guess I need to get better at chickens fast. Lol

Austrolorps won't have a head spot. The spot is an indicator of barring in the feathers, like a barred rock. That sounds like you have an extra barred rock, or a male black sex link... or any other black barred breed.

She looks nothing like barred rock now. Also, the original barred rock we thought we got looks more like an Australorp. One day, I'll sit down and figure out what happened there.
