Welp, building has started for the new chicken coop at our house (finally!) and with just about all the families help, in just two days, the foundation has been laid, floor in, wall skeletons, and today, the actual boarding for the outside of the walls. The door is in place, the window places are starting to take shape. But, we are at a loss at what to do for the run. We are building the coop right next to the woods behind our house - and here in kentucky, the foxes and hawks are thick. So, we want to bury the run wire underneath the ground, and put a wire roof over the run, but we're not sure how deep to bury the run wire, or how tall to make it. Any suggestions?

I used pallets from sear's.

It worked well.

Good Luck.

I'd make the run tall enough for you to stand up in if at ALL possible; it will be more expensive, yes, but a GIANT quality-of-life issue for you when it comes time to chase chickens or to clean out the run, realio trulio

You might consider laying an apron of mesh fencing horizontally on the ground, out 3' or more from the base of the fence, instead of digging it in. It will be much less work, and also you will be able to TELL when the wire starts to rust thru and needs to be replaced. (And I guarantee that even galvanized wire WILL rust if buried - all it takes is a wee scratch in the galvanization and the rust is off to the races - and underground there, who's to know until Mr Fox discovers he can dig right thru).

Good luck,

Pat
