Our chicken run is a rather large area (more like a yard) that gets good shade from a tree we planted a few years ago and a trumpet vine very close to the west side of the coop. The rest is pea gravel and sand (from a pool we put in that is no longer there). So, one of our Americaunas has a severely impacted coop with rock and sand. She is having surgery tonight. Vet says this could happen to other chickens and we need to change landscaping. I am thinking of a large brick pathway and sitting area to the coop from the gate, and maybe some raised beds along the sides and bottle brush and other perennials that are woody to the sides. They love hanging out under woody bushes, and tend to not bother other plants. We will have to remove sand a pea gravel, and I thought I'd cover these areas with pine wood shavings for weed and mud control. Does anyone else have any ideas? The chickens will be free-ranging soon when I'm able to watch them and they have finished laying. Also, they go to visit new chickens next door through the fence (when free ranging), so I need to wait on the free-ranging until a month or so. I'm also crazy to take a chicken to the vet and spend so much? She has surgery tonight. I am in Northern CA where it get really hot. I need hardscape and plant help very soon! I will try to add a picture asap, but basically it is a 50 foot by 50ft square. Thank you!
