Need help with math problem...ANSWER in post #27

My 11yr old had this math problem yesterday and got the answer wrong . For the life of me our family cannot figure out how the teacher got her answer. Only 2 students got the answer right.

Please help

Question-Tom got on an elevator at the middle floor of a building, went up 4 floors, down 3 floors, up 1 floor and down 9 floors, where he left the elevator on the first floor.

How many floors are in the building?

I would say he got on the elevator on the 9th floor and the building has 18 floors.

Wouldn't it be that the building had 18 floors? The middle floor would be the 9th floor, right?
