Hi all,
I just got 12 bantam hatching eggs. 6 are under my broody salmon Faverolle. My main goal is to use things that I have on hand and not procure any more things. I have read a lot on the internet, but not enough to make me feel comfortable, so I am seeking advice from any of you have had a successful hatch using this method.
I would love some input about the incubator I've made. I am using a large thick walled syrofoam cooler. I've poked holes in it on the sides and on the top. I've made a hole in the top and taped a piece of glass on it. I have the heat pad on the bottom on medium. It is the kind of pad that stays on at all times and it's wet/dry. I put a towel on that. There is a sponge in a dish with water in there. I am using a termometer/hygrometor with probe. I have a back up thermometer at the top of the cooler. The eggs are going to go in the partial egg carton with holes cut in the bottom pointed side down. There is a tube on the bottom to act as the rocker for when I plan on turning the eggs every 8 hours. I am educated in the temp/humidity that is required, how to candle, monitor, stop rocking, etc. I don't plan on using a fan, but I will get one if it's absolutely necessary, but don't want to get one if I can hatch with what I have. I have a lot of other things around that I can add to this project if needed such as hardware cloth, etc.
I do not plan on using this as a chick brooder longer than a day once they have hatched, I have been successful in raising them in another way.
I posted to the FB BYC forum and didn't get a single response which leads me to believe that my post isn't posting or it's a really uninteresting topic.
Thanks in advance for any notes and help
