This is how I did mine.

A necessity for us due to space we made a 2 bin exterior nestbox. We framed up on the wall to accept the nestbox I'd already made. Since we couldn't have a normal overhang from the roof we had it open from the front as you can see from the picture below. I was afraid if it opened from the top we'd have rain coming in and making a mess.

Here's what it looks like open. We have hook/eye on both sides and chain to support the hinges.

Have fun!

Hello we are still building our coop but we are getting close to being complete. We wanted a outside egg box so we looked in the forum and found that we liked the rollaway nest boxes. So this is what we came up with but it is work in progess

Wow - you people are creative. My henhouses look like shanty town - one of them even has a tarp over the roof because it leaks. I have NO carpenter skills, but the houses are warm and dry and I whitewash them and keep fresh pine chips in them and keep them de-bugged with DE. I really admire the skills people display on this site and wish I wasn't so old (58) and 'unskilled', because I enjoy building things. I am currently erecting another 6' board fence (it looks okay, but who could mess up on nailing a fenceboard to a 2x4?), and it will hide my little shanty town from the neighbors who have to drive past my house when the road is mud and can see everything. Of course, when the road is dry and there are huge clouds of thick red dust in the air, nobody can see my little shanty town. I also planted some grape vines and a paw paw tree so my birds will have something nutritious and delicious to peck at before too long. Ah well...again, love the photos. One day when I die and go to heaven, there will be perfect henhouses everywhere and no weeds in my lawn.

I just pounded together the nest boxes, cut a hole on the coop, screwed them to the coop, screwed some barn wood to it, and a tin roof and wala. Nestboxes.

I am intrigued by the idea of sloping nest boxes so that the eggs roll to the outside where you can pick them up easily and the chickens don't smash them. But how is this achieved if you also have some kind of nesting material (straw, shavings) in the nestbox. Would that not prevent the egg rolling to the side? Can someone please comment on this that has experience with this system.

TIA
