Do any of you have large breed dogs? If so what and what are good with chickens? I have a great Dane and it hates and wants to eat the chickens but guards them predators......

I have a Great Dane too! Well two of them actually. One of them doesn't mind the chickens at all and the other tries to kill them any chance he gets. I don't think there is a specific breed that would be good, it depends on how you train it. But I would stay away from any type of hunting dog or high-energy dog. I would imagine a mastiff would be good...

i have 2 also...and one wants to kill the other is more like "playing to death"...

I have 2 mutts, the female is 10 and although gentle with humans of all ages I would not trust her around my birds. She got a local duck by the wing when she was younger and if we didn't intervene I have no doubt she would have killed it. We also have a mixed male who's 3 but since I'm not sure about him, I'm not taking any chances.
Here's Cleo looking innocent "No mom, I wouldn't hurt the chicks, I just want to pet them with my teeth."

I have miniature poodles and they are great with my birds. I know they aren't big but I imagine standard (large) poodles would be good.

thats what im looking at.. i have mini dachshunds too and they could care less about the birds.

Trainable breeds will be easier to convince to be polite around the chicken; very self-right types, especially if not introduced to chickens as a puppy, will be more difficult. My terriers, not raised by me from puppyhood, want to kill the birds. The retrievers and pointers I raised and trained were very good with the chickens. There are no magic breeds, it's individual.
