Need Help with Run Fence!

Thanks for the replies. We wanted something much bigger. It would of been 26' each side. Our dogs are brutes, especially the 100lb akita. I know that he will try to get the chickens for months after we put them out. He got a taste of them and is very stubborn. He isn't a digger but will jump and jump on the fence until he realises he can't push it over.

We might fix the fence ourselves and maybe do a wood fence.

Dawn, I love that! It wouldn't work because hubby would have a fit, lol. I was hoping on using the 2 sides of the fence we have up now and just enclose a space in it. How high is that at the top? We are a suburb and can see the neighbors complaining about that.

Thanks again

Good luck in solving your dilemma.

I myself would have dealt with my dogs if I was having that problem and wanting my chickens.

Years ago my grandfather and I had a pair of hunting dogs...black and tan hounds...well my female decided to kill chickens. She killed 4 hens and finally I had enough. My method may seem cruel but it did not hurt her and it worked.

I put her on a chain attached to a tree with only about 5' lead but enough for her food and water to be within reach, I tied the hen she killed around her neck snugly and left it on her like that for 5 days. Imagine the heat and humidity in South Florida in August...the hen started smelling horrid which did not suit her sensitive nose, there was no room for her to get a claw under the string holding it to her and she could not get away from it. Well, when I cut the carcass loose and released Bella...she would not even LOOK in the direction of the chickens again. She lived 12 more years and never went after another chicken.

So if yours got a taste for the chicks maybe give them a bad taste for the chicks if they kill another one.

Hi blb!

Our run is anywhere from 10' - 12' high...it all depends on where you stand and measure.

We're renting close to 2 acres out in cow-country. The land runs downhill from the road and is mostly hillside. We built the run on one of the levelest spots in the yard. It's roughly 18' wide by 18' long. The height could be shortened by adding to the width, we just ran out of "flat" land.

Dawn, we are also on a hill plus there is no way we could have something that high. We would probably need a permit.

We will probably just go with the chain link fence. When we move we can say that is a dog run. lol

I have a chain link run...you can line it with chicken wire to keep mall chicks in. You can usually find used one around for less. Ours new was $150. Only problem is, weasels and whatnot can get in a night, so you have to shut them in a coop at night.

tiffanyh, I like that a lot!

We used to have a rabbit, she was so sweet! I love how you used your space, great job!

Chicken wire will not keep a determined dog out. When we were new to chickens the farmer we got them from told us to use chicken wire. our collie just kept jumping until he went into the run from the top. luckily he only wanted to chase them and we didnt loose any. Now its 1x1welded wire and nothing gets in. Maybe chicken wire was studderer years ago but its not good for much nowadays. i dont jeven use it to keep critters out of my garden as last year the rabbits just broke through by bending it into large enough holes to get in.
