hi i need some help with one of my birds........ i have a hen who is sick....my rir who is 4 is depressed..standing by herslef sometimes and sometiimes she is walking around pecking at stuff she acts like she is looking for sruf to eat but doesnt end up eating much. she is thin....doesnt have an appetite but we did see her drinking. i brought her in a cleaned up her bum...she had a lot of poop there...i noticed she was thin at that time. she poop is a little loose. i noticed she was bit diffeent about 2 weeks ago.

her breathing seems fine...no discharge.
my are not laying right now. we havent gotten an egg in more than a month.
i have one going thru a major molt.
i dont know why the others arent laying..they seem robust and healthy.
i didrecently add 8 new birds to the flock. we got them in may and introduced them in august. they are all mingling fine. i did notice the change in egg producton when we inrroduced them.
i went to the feedstore and bought liquid sulfa-nox and i also got piperazine.
i dont know if she might have coccidiosis or worms.

for the past several months wild birds were able to get into the pen and we put up the netting yesterday. i guess they could have gotten something from the wild ones like cocidiosis. i'm not sure what to do. they also have avia charge 2000 to drink and regular water. not sure what to do but need to do something quick.
thanks very much

Hi, I guess you have checked for lice? very prevalent during moult time> Sorry I havent had any really sick chickens yet touch wood, im sure someone here can offer more advice.
Hope she gets better real soon.

I am sorry I cannot help you with any definitive advice on what is ailing her...just keep monitoring and reporting symptoms as they occur.. it could be so very many things at the moment with what you have posted... it is good you are giving the avia charge...if she is drinking/eating sufficiently (separate her to monitor this) and still losing weight then that would be a very important symptom to help narrow down the possibilities (in that instance avian TB would be a likely candidate specially with all the access to wild bird popula6tion you reported) ...

I'm thinkin the lower form of trichomoniasis, as wild birds are carriers, And the pecking and nibbling of food is typical with birds with trich, With Tb they retain their appetite, And very doubtful it's coccidiosis. What color are her droppings?

well...her droppings that i cleaned off were a combination of green and white i think.....it was kind of dryish so it was hard to tell.....but yesterday when i saw her poop once it was grren and white and a little bit loose. i didnt see any red in it or yellow. now i didnt go poking around in it with a stick so i am a little vague with the color...but there was no red that i could see easily. but it was definitely loose. but i wouldnt say diarreah.

From wild birds they can get worms, mites and lice. From those or moulting they can get very thin, depressed looking and listless and even die.

Moulting is hard on them but I take that opportunity to give them a good wormer and dust them well several times so that they can make the best use of the food they have. Also I increase the protein in their diet by switching them to turkey grower until they have thier new feathers. I give all sick listless hens turkey grower as well.

Hope that helps.

Justusnak, Search avian trichomoniasis, Also with a load of worms so heavy that they are listless and not eating, their poop is always foamy

we ended up gviving the sulfa -nox and we will treat with the piperazine afterward.
she ate some dandelion greens yesterday so that was great. i'll give everyone an update as time goes on.
thanks so much for the help
