Need help with Storm-Scared Dogs?

I've used Bach Rescue Remedy made from flower essence. I have a 5.5 lb pomeranian that shakes and piddles on the floor when there is fireworks (like now) or thunderstorms. This stuff helps a lot. You can find it in the health food stores. I have to give it to her in anticipation of a storm though, timing is everything. Poor animals....having to deal with people and their noises....

I agree with this! I just act normal and do routine stuff around the house and just talk to my dog like nothing is unusual, and that helps her a lot! She still follows me around the house and pants but she isn't as nervous and calms down faster. I believe you can feed the fear when you coddle them too much.

This is Leroy:

He is scared to death of storms!! He is an outside dog and when ever the sky get the least bit dark, he flys under the house!!!!

Not to long ago, we had some pretty bad storms, rained like crazy and lots of thunder and some lightning. As usual, I slept through most of it. When I got up the nest morning, I looked at the front door, which is white, and it looked like something had been murdered up against my door!

When I got closer, I could see hundreds of paw prints in red mud!!! I guess he tried with all his might to get in the house!!!!

I still haven't gotten all the mud off!!!!

There is also a very good medication you can get from the Vet called Clomipramine. Works great for separation anxiety, fears, etc...

My parent's dog was petrified by storms for years. Just neurotic. One time she got on the bed, pinned me down by my long hair and tried to climb on my face. She's 70 pounds.

My mother tried demagnetizing her with dryer sheets and she hasn't had a problem since. Before a storm rolls in, she just rubs her down. Might be worth a shot before you spend a ton of money on a cape.

I let my dog sleep on the sofa chair in my room during storms and just turn the radio on and she calms down.
