Okay so for the last 2 days one of my hens was in the list state of almost looking like it's dead. It's winter here and cold, so I thought it some how froze to death. To my surprise it was alive but stayed limp when I picked her up. I put her under a heat lamp for a bit till she got up in her own, this happened 2 days in a row. My poor 8 year cried cause she thinks it's dying. However today I woke up and found the hen sitting next to a shell less egg. She was up walking around like normal. Is there something wrong with her or not.

CTKen has given you the best place to find some answers. It is upsetting when one of our animals isn't doing well, sorry for your little girl.

Best of luck to you!

Welcome!

I have a hen who has laid a couple of soft shelled eggs and she has real problems doing it. Because the shell is soft it flexes so their muscles have difficulty gripping and pushing. If the egg breaks inside them, they are at the risk of infection.

I hope that your gal continues to show no side effects. As CTKen has suggested, the ER Forum is a good place to seek assistance if she does have any more issues.

I also hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends
