We'll help if we can. We need more information about your coop and run. Were the birds out free-ranging when it happened or inside? Day or night attack? Have you seen anything around? Every attack is like a mini-murder mystery. We need details and clues to solve it. If you can provide some more information we may be able to help.

Sorry about your loss.

the chickens were free-ranging when it happened and it was getting close to sun down

we think it might be a hawk but are not 100% sure

You know the predators in your area better than we do, so if you suspect a hawk then a hawk it probably was. Keep an eye on the kill area and your hawk will likely be seen coming back to the scene of the crime.

Again, sorry about your bird.

Geezz. If you lived in Maine, I would say a Fisher Cat.. They are brutal... And that is their MO..
I'm so sorry that you lost one of your girls.. Hope you get it taken care of...

we did not see any tracks but there's been a big hawk over head today so we are pretty sure its the one. but its the head thing that has us thrown off

I have many predators here but the only thing that has got my chickens is hawks. They don't eat or take off the head, they rip a hole into their backs or sides and eat the insides. Lot's of feathers around since they pull them out first to expose the skin. If there Was there a big hole in it's body that would be a hawk.
