I need ideas for how to keep a coop warm (20 degrees celcius) and draft free ,but ventalated. I'm using this for junglefowl ,so it has to be able to keep them warm and ventalated ,but there cant be any drafts from vents ,or I'll have some dead birds. It gets to minus 20-40 degrees celcius in the winter...

I'm just a beginner at this, but from what I'm seeing and reading it seems like you would need to insulate your coop, and add ventilation at the top-away from where the birds are. Some use heat lamps as well. Just some thoughts...I haven't read anything on junglefowl.

Good luck!

Where are you located... 20 to 40 celcius is -4 to -20 Farenheit. We have alot of Jungle fowl here in San Diego and they do quite well. They used them at the zoo for insect control for years. No we dont get this cold but they strike me as very hardy and adapable birds.

Here is a link to a Cold Weather Coop builder. She is in Canada.

But there are several here that are located in Alaska Minnisota Michigan. Key in the words Cold Coop at the search bar. I am certain there are several threads out there where you can piece together info for your situation.

There are also coop heaters that are chicken safe you plug them into a Thermostatically Controlled Outlet 35 Degrees on-45 Degrees off

Me personally I would insulate the coop to retain heat but once you insulate you definately need to allow the air to ventilate or you will get condensation inside the coop which is Very Not Good.

I have no personal experience building enclosed coops though all mine have been open air.

good luck. Oh And

I think I'll go withn insulation and a flat pannel heater.

Also out of interest ,what species of junglefowl go you keep ??

Closest to jungle fowl I will be raising will be Sumatras. I am still in the planning stages for my next coop. I have no chickens at this time. I lost everything a few years back to predators. We had a big fire in San Diego and it drove the predators into my area which is sixty miles away up in the high desert. I lost thirty chickens in thirty days.

The people I knew that had Jungle fowl were Boarding ranch owners. They Kept a few around for bug control. There are several people around San Diego area that scooped up some jungle fowl for their own flocks, when ever they became available. Usually when the Zoo got overrun...

be patient the following website loads slow but it is sooo well worth it:

This fellow is trying to preserve the species the Zoo was using. About ten or twenty years ago The Zoo culled all their jungle fowl. And the bloodlines were almost lost with the exceptoin of people like this fellow and others who kept them because they were pretty and were wily enough to evade coyotes. I would love to have a few... maybe some day. I believe he is a very well respected biologist or premed or something like that. If you had some questions I bet he would respond.

good luck
