New member & have only had chickens for about 7 months.
My favorite chicken which is a production red named Grew, is acting very strange. She is normally a very social sweet bird, always following me around or with the group. For some reason she has isolated herself in a corner of the coop and isnt moving very much. She did have a soft egg today, and if someone could tell my why that happens i would appreciate it.

any ideas from the vets?

Thank you all for the welcomes, links and advice. My little girl seems to be doing just fine now. I did switch from oyster to grit. I have 5 chickens after a predator got one. I used to let them free range until that happened now they are put up each night. My mastiff & American Bulldog watch over them during the day. I must say I am really enjoying having them. I got them on Easter as chicks and I am now getting 3-5 eggs a day

Oyster shell and grit are for two very different things. Oyster shell is added calcium, which helps restore some of what is lost when they lay eggs. Giving oyster shell will stop you from getting soft shelled eggs. Grit is so they can "chew" up their food. They have no teeth, so the grit grinds down the food they eat so it can be digested. It gives no nutritional value. Chickens need both grit and oyster shell if they are locked up. If they free range they may find enough sand, and pebbles to not need grit. To be safe I supply it anyway. They will eat however much they want/need of each.
