need help

My Rooster Pecker Head Red was mauled through the fence by my dogs while foraging in the tomato plants. Part of his glorious comb was torn off and his upper beak is badly damaged. Has anyone had experience with a chicken with these injury's? I'm hoping he can heal up and Ill be able to feed him by hand or special food? I'm really at a loss here or do i need to put him down.

Please post in detail on the "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread. Photos of his beak etc would really help.


You also might putting "Beak injuries," in the search thread and see what comes up. Broken beaks are not uncommon, some people have even used super glue to hold parts together. Commercial egg farms routinely cut most of the beak off(very cruel practice) and the birds survive. Your roo may need some adjustment in feed, like softer mix or food in a pile, so he has a better chance of grabbing some.

beak injuries can be splinted with tea bag paper soaked with superglue gel, just don't get it in the mouth or glue top and bottom beaks together.
wrap chicken in a towel lay on his side and apply soaked tea bag paper with tweezers. bloody combs can be stopped with blood stop powder from tsc or similar store.

So these are before and after pics of Pecker Head, he is healing well I hand fed him and watered him since the mauling. He is getting much better and full of piss and vinegar wont let me hand feed or water him now as he is now doing it himself. Although I have to hold the dish at an angle for him to get a good bite on it (water and food).
first aid I did,
Right after the accident I washed him down with the hose because he was all bloody and I wanted to see the damage.
Then I held the beak and comb with a towel until most of the blood stopped.
Then I used some bag balm at first until I read triple antibiotic ointment would be better.
Two days after I gave him 1/4 of an antibiotic pill I have for my dog. (seams to have done its work no infection present)
His eye in that picture looked like it might be poked out, but today I noticed he is opening it a little peek I have yet to see the full damage though.
He is missing quit a bunch of feathers from his cape neck area but they should grow back, he had puncture wounds on the back of his neck and his back. Those I treated with beta-dine and Triple Antibiotic Ointment.
After all this I set him up in my puppy whelping box and some straw inside the shop with a fire going night and day to keep him warm as its cold here.
That's about it besides stoking the fire and getting him fed and watered. I have started to let him back in gen.pop. with his duck friends during the day and back into the box at night.
He must be doing good because them ducks are running for their lives, can you say lonely rooster. lol
I fed him a combination of eggs for protein and sweet potatoes for the ninja vitamin value.
