NEED IDEAS PLEASE FOR CHEAP EFFECTIVE NESTING BOXES PLEASE

Our wooden ones can be a nightmare to clean out and keep mite free there has to be a better way.

Any photos of some easy clean and easy to make nesting boxes would be appreciated. I need some Ideas to keep them off the ground as we do get snakes and I need to be able to make sure the snakes cant hide under them either.

Any advice is appreciated

I use plastic milk crates with a 3" board zip tied to the front. They can accomdate 2 crampted hens at once inside laying eggs (Golden Comet hens)
Nest boxes
In my nest boxes I fold a nylon mesh feed bag to fit (nest boxes are 1 ft³). When a bag gets soiled; fold a new one; pop out the soiled; pop in the new. Feed bags are a nylon mesh bag frozen poop just peels off in below freezing temperatures and just flakes off in summer when left out in the sun to bake and dry.

5 gal bucket lay on the side would work and easy to clean.

I have wooden nest boxes for my hens. I also line them with dish pans I got at Walmart.




I cut a little bit out of the front to make them easier to get into. I just pull them out and dump the shavings on the floor. Some of the shavings are pushed out into the nest box, but not much. If you get a nest pan that is really nasty, you can just rinse it off and its ready to go!

I also use wooden homemade 16" cubed sized boxes.

I line with disposable paper leaf bags for super easy cleanout.

I am using dish pans to line my wooden nest boxes with as well. Dollar Tree is where I got mine. I made the whole thing for around 60 dollars. I had to add anti tip boards just under the lips of the tubs. So far so good. Now if they would just lay.



The tubs in the center don't show well since they are an ugly green and have a different lip.

I plan on using five gallon buckets on their sides in my next coop build. Leave the top on and cut it out leaving four or five inches in at the bottom to hold the bedding.

This is what I use as well, sure I could have done it cheaper, but at the end of the day when I factored in the hassle of making/fabricating or what not, the extra cost of simply picking up a litter box and being done won out... And they work very well...

If you want cheap, inquire around at some ethnic grocery stores or ethnic restaurants for produce bins, most of the produce coming into the US from Mexico and Central America is now shipped in disposable plastic (instead of wood) bins, so you should be able to get them for free as they are just tossed in the trash... I have been getting about a dozen (or more) a week from one of my local grocery stores, as I plan to do my entire garden next year using them as raised beds...

Me too. also screw them down since I had a Brahma hen climb inside of one and she flipped it over to where she was trapped inside.
