Need info on chickens for eggs....Don't know anything about chickens

Hello,
My husband and I are venturing into the world of organic farming in an urban setting and would like to have a couple chickens for eggs. Does anyone have some suggestions as to which chickens are best in that setting. There's just the 2 of us. We are going to build a portable chicken coop....chicken tractor to house them. Are you going to use them just for eggs or for meat as well?

I have ducks right now, but if I ever decide to get chickens, I want Faverolles.

They are a dual purpose breed, and if space is tight, they even come in bantam size.

Second, read up for a while and also see what kind of birds you can get locally. Do you want to raise them from chicks or get hens so you have eggs right away?

I don't have experience with any other breed, but I would whole-heartedly suggest Orpingtons. We have a flock of Buff Orps, and they're all pretty laid-back. We did have one hen who was pecky as a teenager, but has mellowed out after a couple months.

Of course, a rooster would (prob'ly) not be popular with your neighbors.

Some people would suggest bantam-sized chickens for small yards... They are smaller than normal-sized birds, need less space, eat less food, but do lay smaller eggs. They aren't tiny eggs, but they are smaller than what you would normally buy in a grocery store.

as far as what kind of chicken it depends on what you want from it.large eggs?green eggs?brown?white?

I was very new to chickens way back in September and looking very much for the same thing. I bought 4 birds POL (at point of laying) and they started laying after a few weeks which gave me time to get used to them and to learn what fun they were.

Now I get 4 eggs a day regularly and I sell the extras I don't use which covers the cost of their food each week really.

best thing I have ever done, and now I am getting ready to plant my vegetables this year. and I have plenty of good fertilizer as well.

if you buy them at POL, and with moving house for themit may take several weeks before they start tolay, but not as long as it would if you buy chicks. But it is entirely your choice and a great way to learn.
