Hey mohillbilly. I would recommend the cups. both will freeze but my girls prefer the cup system. You can find them on eBay. That is where I bought mine. I got 5 of them for around $22.00 with free shipping. Then you just build a PVC piping system and screw the cups directly into the drilled holes in the PVC. Works very well and no more messy water pans.

Not really.

Can I use them on day old baby chicks?

Yes.

Do I have to screw them to the bottom of the bucket or can I screw them on the bottom side of the bucket?

Screwing into the bottom of the bucked is probably better but you could try the sides. If you watch your chickens drink they scoop water then tilt their heads back to swallow. It easier if they already have their heads back because they are drinking from above.

Are they worth getting?

Absolutely!

What is good or bad about them?

The good is that your water stays clean and won't get knocked over. The bad is that you chickens have to learn to use it but that isn't very hard. Mine figured it out quick enough.

Chickens will go to open water sources naturally. If you give them a choice they will go to open water no matter how dirty or infested. BUT if you just supply their water through nipples they will naturally learn to use it on their own. Usually in about two hours. There is no "training" a chicken, so don't even try. Cups are kinda cute, but have the same problems that open waterers have...
the chicks will get them filthy in a days time. The best thing about nipple waterers is that you don't have to clean and/or refill them every day. My five BO's have used nothing but nipple waterers for the last six months and nobody has died of thirst yet. I re-fill the five gallon source bucket once a week, using 1 tablespoon of Braggs ACV per gallon. Have had no freezing problems yet, but then we are having a warm winter.

You will love them. They maintain a specific water level in them and will not overflow. saves floor space in the coop also. I put mine in the coop because it is insulated and they will not freeze in the winter.
