I have a problem with the number of roosters and hens in our coop. There are four roosters (one is grown, the others are all brothers and are about three months old) and seven hens (eight, if you count the crazy, reclusive frizzle). We just had a hen pass away. I know this is too many roosters to have with this number of hens; so we were thinking of getting some newly hatched chicks so that they would be sexed and we (hopefully) wouldn't have any more roosters. Just wanted to see what everyone thought about this.
None of our roosters are mean. The babies are a cross between their buff orpington dad and silkie mom, who still mothers them. But if there is any possible conflict, we really want to avoid it.
If we do get more pullets, we would like to get them locally. I've heard too many horror stories about shipping chicks to do it that way. We are in eastern Connecticut, if there is anyone around our area who will sell chicks!
Thanks!
