Need plant advice, Southern Califonia, Ruaral Hemet

I have been wanting to plant some kind of grass or really anything that they can eat a lot of without getting sick. My chickens are in a large pen area and don't get to free range. So I was wondering what I could plant out here that basically grows like wildfire or at least something that is really good for them. Watering is not an issue. Anyone have any advice?

How many chickens? How big an area? Understand chickens is a large run can kill all vegetation except established trees and bushes.

Well I have a roo and five hens in a 648 square foot area.

Yeah, I have found that out. Their pen is totally bare.

I can't get fresh cut grass from my friend anymore. I found out that from time to time they get a fungus that grows on their grass. So that is no longer an option.

I have one picture of my coop and bit of the surrounding area. It's not the full view and I don't have time to take another just yet. But you get the idea.

There is a way to grow things in the run, growing frames. The topic hascome up many times. Use the search engine up top put in "growing frames plants"
