I have eggs under a broody hen. Today is day 20 and I heard chirping in one of the eggs this afternoon while momma was out of the nest. When she came back to get on her eggs she stepped on that egg and crushed it. I didnt know anything about the yolk or leaving the chick in the egg for the yolk to be absorbed so my question is will that chick now die? Im so worried and nervous, I have watched over these eggs like a hawk all this time just to screw it up in the end!

How crushed is the egg?
Can you get a picture of it?
Do you have an incubator or the ability to keep the egg warm with a heating pad if you were to remove it from the nest?

Not necessarily, I've had chicks with yolks out survive before. Did you leave it with mom, or did you assist the rest of the way? Do you know how bad it is?

Its with mom but mom is eatting the yolk...is there something I should do?

My dumb self not knowing any better took the egg off. I dont have an incubator, the chick is still with momma.

If she is eating it then it may be too late to do anything.
The chick won't survive if it doesn't absorb it's own yolk.

Has she hatched chicks before?
You better keep a close eye on her and the eggs...she may kill them all.

The mom is eating the unabsorbed yolk on the chick?
Is this correct?

This is her 1st time and mine as well. Should I take the chick out and bring it in and put a heat lamp on it?
