My ducks have a kiddie pool in their enclosure. I empty and refill it every other day. (Sometimes every day). And when I empty it I move it around so it doesn't kill the grass in one spot. But... Where they spill water over the sides it gets muddy because they stick their heads in the mud looking for stuff (to eat, I guess). In the next week or two their enclosure will be extended and I'll be adding a shady spot. (There is no shade there in the summer afternoons).

What would you suggest for shade? I'll attach a pic of what they have right now. The shade spot would need to be in the corner closest to the camera and some of the front. (Because of where the sun sets)

And what should I do about the mud? I was thinking of using some kind of rock. It would be great if I could figure out a way to build up the rocks around it like a hill with the pool in the middle. That way the rocks will reduce the mess from mud and they can walk up the slope of the rocks to the pool and when I change the water I could take the pool out to rinse it good. But then, I think the rocks would fall into the spot where the pool goes. Any ideas??

Sorry, I forgot the pic. This is before it got muddy.

Hi Rubberduckies. I just saw no one has replied. I had first grass, then pea gravel in my duck pen. Now I've got mud. And straw on top of mud. So my plan for 2013 is landscape fabric + more pea gravel. Keep your grass as long as you can. I wish I had grass in my pen. For shade, I've found recycled trampoline tarps work great.

I bought a shade tarp off ebay for shade. It allows water to run thru. It is the same as a trampoline tarp. That is a thrifty idea if you can find one. Ducks = mud. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies! I will be looking for a trampoline tarp asap. Amiga, I've seen that thread before. There's a lot of good ideas there. Thanks for reminding me. I think I have an idea that might work. When I get some more work done I'll post more pics in the Quack Shack thread. Thanks again!

I'd try a shade tarp. As for the mud, it's an issue, and rather hard to avoid, you could try a gravel probably with a sand base coming out around the pool a few inches.

My area is just mud, they can have it lol The penned area is 1/3 of an acre but they free range the bulk of the year so that cuts it back sorta.
