Hi everyone I'm just looking for a little reassurance, I have an egg that pipped externally at 11.30 this morning at about 5pm tonight the little hole was made slightly larger and I thought the chick was going to start to make an appearance although it seemed to be going slightly in the wrong direction (long ways down the egg rather than round the air cell) anyway it didn't continue and has stayed at a slightly larger hole, it's now just about 10 hours later and I can see the chick moving around through the hole but it doesn't seem to be making any more progress, I would hate for the chick to be stuck and struggling and even worse die! Is this still within a normal time or should I start to worry??? I can see a sleepless night ahead

I would not be worried at all yet. Could be up to 24 hours before the chick decides to hatch. Hatching can't be rushed, the chick needs time to absorb the yolk and blood vessels before it hatches. Helping too early could cause more harm than good. I'm not a helper of chicks and don't even look at them until the 24 hours is up. For me healthy chicks will hatch in their own.
Have a read of this article, lots of great info ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

Good luck.

HI, I just went through that 2 days ago. My first batch of eggs to hatch and I worried all night. We heard the chirping from inside the egg around noon and then the first external pip was around 8pm. Then nothing... about 1:00am a different egg just started going to town and pipped and came out in about 20 minutes. I was so tired I went to bed and when I got up at 6 am another chick was hatched... not the one with the hole in the egg. That one finally came out about 1/2 hour later so it took a good long time.

I have one right now with an external pip and some bleeding but he is alive in there and has been in there with the hole now for about 15 hours. Very tempting to try and help but don't.

Oh, and I had one with a side air cell and thought that would be an issue... nope, came out smooth. None of mine actually went around the air cell. just started to work their way a little bit and then kicked it apart.
good luck.

Thankyou I feel a bit easier about it now, I just need to hear leaving it is the right thing to do

I look at the eggs too much!! I wish I had some self restraint!! I shall leave the chick to do it's own thing and hope for the best. Thankyou once again

Congrats! I know exactly how you feel... I kept watching the eggs too. so frustrating when nothing happens fast enough. I have a couple right now I am worrying over.

The picture on your name... what kind of chicken is it? looks like a polish mix. Just curious since I just hatched 6 polish mixed.

I know it seemed to take forever!! The picture is a silkie hen that had just had a bath and was sat drying off in my kitchen

(such a normal thing to do) haha

very cool. all of my hens were given to me... only have 2 of them and don't know what kind they are. I do know the Roo is a polish frizzle. The eggs that just hatched are RIR roo and polish hen eggs that were given to me. should be interesting to see what they look like.
