need some answers asap.. chicken sick ..lookslike an air ballon

no I did not mean to penetrate the crop
it is just the skin if she thinks that is where the air is trapped?

I think it may be a case for the vet
the goose story was it about the crop?
this sounds like a really hard job
as they are talking here about using a needle to deflate the bird
this came from the BYC post

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=2063590

IF you can keep her calm while doing it, keep using the 18 g needle, and leave it in while you squeeze her. I wouldn't do that if she struggles with it (SQ emphysema is painful), as you may inadvertantly lacerate something. Also, with a larger guage needle, be sure to read up on where veins and arteries are like the other person said, as you won't be likely to get a deep vein to stop bleeding if you hit it with a 16g or 14g needle.
As far as how often, that will depend on her and the size of the hole in her air sack, if she is filling up enough that it's going into her head, I would do it as often as required and as often as she'll tolerate it to keep her more comfortable, as the hole starts to close, you should be able to do it less often.

well I probably would give up on the situation and cull the bird
but I know you don't feel that way
so hope all goes well

just woke up..checked on here and she still looks like a Pillow.
Its worse now.. More air around her and I am thinking I should just cull her. I dont know enough anatomy of the chicken to safely deflate her and not do more damage to her .Plus seconday infection is allways a possibilty. So .. I think the best thing at this point is to cull.I hate doing it .I dont want to but, at this point its prohably the best.

Thank you so much for the input.. you guys know your stuff for sure.

Its not that I dont want to try to save her.. but I know if I mess this up she will just suffer more and then maybe get another infection from the puncture/ incision site.

Hugs Petra!

Tough decision to make, but I can certainly agree with it.

Could you use this as a learning experience, and after culling, cut her open to see if you can find out what happened inside to cause this.

With much love...

Well..I dont think I could..
and I dont know much of the anatomy of a chicken to analyze what happend. And the bacteria etc .. not sure if I want to open her up and risk maybe spreading it, "if" she has something besides just a ruptured airsack.

Thank you for the kind words:) its hard losing any animal ..even its jus ta chicken it pains me a great deal. I lost horses, dogs and cats but I would never have thought a chicken can crawl into your heart like she did.

Sucks owning animals sometimes:(

Are the air sacs only air? Or exudate in the sacs?

If only air, it's likely clostridium.
If exudates, it's likely M. gallisepticum associated with CRD, in which case she'd show other respiratory illnesses.

For the former, here are some articles:

**However** I suspect that somehow she's ruptured an air sac. In that case, the area is usually disinfected and the air sac is punctured, releasing the air. Iodine and alcohol are good for disinfecting an area and a needle. I would use a dab of antibiotic ointment at the spot.

You'll want to see if you can find a wound - toe nail wound,, puncture from a rooster's spur, etc.

Honestly, to deflate her just find the spot that is the puffiest. Mark by it with a sharpy on the skin. Disinfect that area and just use a sewing needle disinfected.

If you weren't a caring animal owner, you wouldn't feel that it sucks sometimes. And your animals know you care.

Sorry you had to go through this. If it helps any, I would have culled, too.

By the time we got around to " deflate" her and try to save her she was in such distress that I wasnt sure if she would even make it 5 more minutes. I couldnt take it.

It wouldnt have been so bad to try this on her BUT.. if she was in distress.. the heat.. not enough fluids or food.. secondary infection etc.. I rather not prolong her suffering

Its over.. bless her little heart

Petra

Awww hon, I'm sorry. Well either way, you did the right thing. You were the one there looking at her and knew exactly where she was in the fight. I'm very sorry for the heartache of your loss. Bless you for trying.
