Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

Aww, they are all so cute! I can't wait!

I have had some temperature fluctionations in my LG so I hope it doesnt affect my hatch. I did buy a nice flashlight last night that works great for candling. I was able to toss 4 eggs that were quitters or had blood rings. I have two more I am not sure about so I set them in the back corner. They don't smell but the have a black spot that looks icky inside. It doesnt fill up near as much space in the eggs as the others do at the same age and the black is not moving. Also when I move the egg in my hand it looks that the dark area moves sloshes around in there. Doesn't look good but just in case I may check them again in a few days. I dont want them to explode either - but again, they don't smell bad.

Whoo Hoo! Due to hatch in 6 days!

2 Week candling, 30 going strong. We lost another one that didn't vein so it looks like out of 42 we had 12 that weren't fertile, they were clear. I will have pictures later of the candling.

We are having micro bursts right now, plus thunder...the power went out for a second, then right back on..now hoping it stays on! Go away storms!!

A neighbor across the street has a pine tree that when the micro bursts happen, will lean almost half way over! It's huge. At least it is leaning away from the house. My DH and I went to the front window to see what it looked like out there. My guess is, with these bursts, there are trees down somewhere..always are when we get these. The thunder is going..but the wind is still bursting out of no where it seems...and it seems that when our power goes out, it's more than likely to happen during micro bursts than lightening and thunder.
Go away storms...go away!!! I keep saying it, maybe if I say that enough!

Got through the micro bursts..the power only went out for that short time..thank goodness no longer. I have lemon/blues..cochins..hatching right now.
It brought down a tree down the street from us. A beautiful large pine. My DH is down there with his chain saw right now helping with getting it cut up..part of it is in the street. My DS is helping with the loading of the limbs.
So glad this storm has passed, we have shingles from peoples houses every where. They say the winds got up to 61 miles an hr. at times. It was loud out there. This is our first bad micro burst storm this year. I am sure we'll see a lot on the news..we lost a pannell of our fence on the east side of our home. Can't complain, my hubby can fix that.

Good luck with your broody. I looked at your blog--is she an Australorp? I have a Speckled Sussex that went broody last summer while we were on vacation. If she goes again I was going to tuck some eggs under her. That's a picture of her in my avatar when I took her off the nest for a break--she looked like a small angry tom turkey. Boy was she mad!

My eggs are in my home-made incubator. Three of them are from Black Copper Marans hens , but I'm not sure if dad is a BCM or a Light Brahma.

Great photo -she does look like a turkey! You asked about my broody -- I think she is a Jersey Giant cross -- maybe crossed with an Australorp?

Good luck with your homemade incubator -- I hope you have better luck than I did. (This was a couple of years ago, and also chronicled in my blog -- 12 eggs, 1 surviving chick. ) So far I'm finding the broody hen method to be more fun.

Good morning everyone! We are getting close aren't we?! 6 days left for me and I candled yesterday with my new ovascope...it was great! (Cynthia...was it you that said you found it for $59.00? Mine was that price...just when you add on shipping and taxes it was over $70) As it turns out...the eggs I had marked with ? on...were indeed no good so my old homemade candler worked better than I gave it credit for. However...I could see "veining" for the first time with my new ovascope! I think the magnifier is what helps me with that. SO....out of 24 eggs...12 of which were FREE because the seller did not know if they were fertile..(.these are English Orpington mixed with American and you often have to trim around the vents for fertilization to occur)..I have 15 developing well and SHOULD hatch out on the 28th.

Cynthia...so glad you kept power during your storms! We are expecting lots of rain in the next week but so far...no storms.
Hope everyone enjoys Good Friday...and happy incubator watching!!

I would set them when you'll be around to watch them for awhile. If you set them in the evening then go to bed, you'll be too stressed to get any sleep! It is normal for the eggs to bring the temp of the incubator down for several hours or more after you place them. Remember you are putting room temp (70 degree ?) eggs into a 100 degree incubator and they will absorb the heat thats in there and the incubator will have to bring them up 30 degrees or so. Don't fret. Good luck!

Lock down (day 18) starts tomorrow for me. I want to go to the feed store this weekend and get chick feed... but I'm feeling superstitious about it and thinking maybe I should wait until I actually have a live chick.
