I want a new breeding group, I want a pretty chicken and good egg layer. Also one that can handle texas weather, what breed do you sudjest? I want a docile chicken as well.

I would suggest Black Australorps. They are incredibly hardy. For over 50 years, I've raised them in Texas, I've raised them in CA where summer temperatures reached 123 F, and I've raised them in northern Kansas where winter temperatures reached 30 F below zero, and they did just fine. They are also very calm and gentle birds. My children, and now my grandchildren, made lap pets out of them. And they are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. You can't go wrong with Black Australorps. Whatever you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

How about trying something more exotic? Cream Legbars will be fine in your climate, are good foragers, & good layers of very pretty blue eggs! Also curious and friendly if properly socialized to people. Mine are great birds!

yeah I had cream legbar.. gorgeous birds, just wernt the best layers for us.

Right now I have a spitzhauben who is a shockingly excellent layer of pretty white eggs (my only white egg layer). She is a fun girl, not flighty, and curious. Marches right up to my dog and wigs him out!
Also, Marans are great birds with calm, curious personalities, people-friendly, and come in a variety of colors. any who doesn't like chocolate eggs for breakfast?? :) I raise Splash Marans!
